Exploring the potential of local and regenerative materials.
In 2020, the construction industry was responsible for 38% of global CO₂ emissions (Neill, 2020), emphasizing its critical role in the climate crisis. To address this, our project examines natural, bio-based building materials, specifically dry leaves, flax, hemp, and willow, that can be grown and sourced in the UK. By exploring these materials' sustainability, carbon-sequestering potential, biodiversity benefits, and cultural significance, we created a comprehensive research catalogue and designed a lampshade using woven willow, flax, agar, and pine. This evocative, light-responsive piece exemplifies the potential of regenerative materials in everyday objects, aiming to inspire sustainable shifts in material choice and design practices. Through fieldwork, interviews, and material testing, our research offers a model for rethinking the role of locally-sourced, regenerative materials in construction.
